The team Lumière 2012 wishes to thank the artists, special guests, movie theaters as well as the public and private partners, for their enthusiasm and participation in making the fourth edition of the festival a success !

The Lumière film festival 2012, which took place from Monday, October 15 to Sunday, October 21 in Lyon and Greater Lyon, concluded in front of 4000 spectators with the screening of Heaven's Gate by Michael Cimino, in his presence and that of Isabelle Huppert, who spoke beautifully about the sometimes painful adventure that was the movie. Both were impressed by the immense Halle Tony Garnier and very moved by the energetic and enthusiastic reception of the public, who never left the hall. "With Isabelle, we were children of heaven. We just didn’t know it yet," declared Cimino, after remaining speechless for a long while before the warm ovation of the public. It was a great moment that the audience will not soon forget. The film, restored by The Criterion Collection under the supervision of Michael Cimino, will be released in theatres in February 2013 thanks to Carlotta Films.

The previous day, at the Lyon Congress Centre, Ken Loach received the 2012 Lumière Award from the hands of Eric Cantona, the latter whom he had directed in his film Looking for Eric, screened that evening (thanks to Diaphana, Why Not, Wild Bunch and Sixteen Films). The former- footballer-tuned-actor described the director as "a man who lives up to the convictions he defends. Along with Alex Ferguson [Manchester United coach], Ken Loach is one of the two exceptional beings [he] has met in [his] life." For his part, the recipient Mr Loach wished to express everything that France and the Cannes Film Festival had done for him, and in supporting the work of the CNC, insisted that the funding of cinema not be questioned.
As per tradition at Lumière, many filmmakers and actors were present to welcome Mr Loach on stage and pay homage to him: Jerry Schatzberg, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Ariane Ascaride, Laurent Gerra, Marjane Satrapi ...
After Clint Eastwood, Milos Forman, and Gérard Depardieu, Mr Loach is thus another giant of the cinema who is honoured for the lifetime achievement of his work.

 Lumière 2012 also meant classic movie screenings in (full!) theatres in and around Lyon, it meant a projection of Day for Night with audio description for the visually impaired at the Zola theatre in Villeurbanne, film archives about Lyon in the grand salons of City Hall (more than 1000 participants) and cinema images by the city of Lyon projected in large format on the façades of the city and at the entrance of the Fourvière Tunnel.

The festival was also about projections in special places for an audience who usually cannot go to the movies: a screening of E.T. by Steven Spielberg for sick children at the Woman-Mother-Child Bron Hospital was shown, and My Name is Joe by Ken Loach was presented by Emmanuelle Devos and screened at the Lyon-Corbas prison for male and female inmates

It was about encounters and lectures and conferences for the general public and professionals (Max von Sydow, Jacqueline Bisset, François Samuelson, Gaumont, Clotilde Courau, etc.).

 The festival also witnessed the opening of a new photo gallery of the Institut Lumière in the city centre, with the exhibition "Bob Dylan by Jerry Schatzberg," portraits of a giant of the 20th century photographed by Jerry Schatzberg from 1965 to 1967. The exhibition continues until mid-November (3 rue de l'Arbre Sec, Lyon 1st).

72,000 movie tickets, 27 000 visitors at villages of the festival, exhibitions, the "Cinema Monplaisir" marketplace, and activities and meetings organised around projections, this 4th edition thus counts nearly 100,000 people attending in six days and one night. This strong participation has confirmed the success of the principle of film heritage based on the love of cinema, the energy of joyful sharing, and the transmission of its history.
