Antoine Lumière was born in 1840 in the French Department of Haute-Saône to a humble family. After serving an apprenticeship to a sign painter in Paris, he set up first as a painter then as a portrait photographer in Besançon; it was in this town that Auguste (1862) and Louis (1864) were born. However, it was in Lyon, to where the family moved in 1870, that he really started to rise in the world. In 1882, he made the transition from small-scale to the industrial production thanks to the success of the snapshot photographic plate invented by his son Louis. He devoted the last years of his life to painting and died in Paris on April 2nd 1911. |
